The motto of Grow Diversity Talent In Technology! Event was a powerful quotation by Abraham Lincoln: “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” When it comes to the diverse employee, the necessity of taking the extra step in order to achieve goes without saying. The goal of the event was to pass on information strategies and methods to help the diverse employee with career management and personal branding.

Keynote speaker Linda Parker Pennington’s presentation focused on how to implement key talent and organizational strategies to ensure career success. Next, in a workshop with Nancy Douyon, attendees learned how to employ different cultural ideals and cultural practices to widen their opportunities. The questions asked was how to find a balance so a professional can represent diversity while making sure their professional online reputation is in line with their personal brand objective. This is an ongoing part of the mission of DVRSTY-STEM Accelerators as well.

When asked by Janice Edwards about the genesis of Dvrsty-Stem Accelerators, Charlotta Carter explained, “I have a very full background in diversity and diversity STEM in a number of the companies I have worked for in the past so having my interest in diversity come full circle with Dvrsty-Stem Accelerators has been my dream. It is exciting to be moving forward with it.”

About DVRSTY-STEM Accelerators

Launched In 2015, DVRSTY-STEM Accelerator (DSA) is a nonprofit organization providing resources and opportunities to grow the amount of diversity talent across the nation with a focus On STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) environments. Given this focus, DVRSTY-STEM Accelerators has emphasized its initial efforts in Northern California from Silicon Valley to San Francisco. The goal is to engage with corporations, VCs, entrepreneurs in order to make diversity a top priority when it comes to hiring, training, networking, retention, and entrepreneurship

Charlotta Carter on Her Business Diversity Goals

When asked about what the successful outcomes of DVRSTY-STEM Accelerators would look like by Janice Edwards, Charlotta Carter highlighted her vision when she said, “If you look at what successful growth and diversity look like, there are several layers. You really need to have a foundation where executives have bought into the idea. If you don’t have that conviction, the rest of it is just noise. If you achieve buy-in at the executive level, then you can start to build on programs that foster a company culture. Such a culture will allow diverse resources to be utilized and a diverse employee to thrive. Once this culture is in place, the pipeline will do the rest. The pipeline is never the issue. It’s the buy-in from the top, the strategic programs put effectively in place and the fostering of as culture where a diverse employee can thrive.”
